How to water plants when going away for a long vacation?

We all love waking up to the sight of beautiful blooms glowing under the spell of the golden dawn. At times there are daisies, at times roses, at times orchids, and at times mere hopes. But as good vibes these flowers and plants infuse in us, as much care, they need too. This leashes us to the home in such a way that we fail to go on a long vacation. The reason? Fear of losing these plants due to lack of water. As someone who loves their plants but also loves to travel, I know the struggle of keeping my leafy babies alive while I’m away on a long vacation. But fear not, my fellow plant parents!  Take care of these few tips and you are all set to trek, fly, swim, or whatever you want, all without worrying about your plants back home.

Start preparing your plants

If you do not have any equipment that could help you water your plants from afar, you need to prepare your soil in advance. The key to keeping your plants alive while you’re away is planning ahead. Don’t leave watering until the last minute or you’ll end up with a bunch of dead plants. What you need to do is to start preparing your plants for your vacation at least a week in advance.

Water deeply

Have you ever chugged liters and liters of water before going out to a place where you are doubtful of finding water? The same you have to do with plants too. A few days before you leave, give your plants a deep watering. This will ensure that the soil is thoroughly moistened and will help the plants survive for a longer time without water.

Use self-watering pots

Invest in self-watering pots to buy yourself some peace and your plants some greenery. These pots have a water reservoir at the bottom that slowly releases water to the plant as needed. This way, your plants will get the water they need without drowning them in water. Is not this a wonderful investment? You may easily find these pots from sites or stores dealing in home and garden equipment.

Or another option is to buy watering spikes. These are simple yet useful devices that you can insert into the soil and fill with water. The water will slowly release into the soil as the plant needs it. If you are finding it hard to find in your nearby stores, buy these from any free alternative to eBay where you can get these at a good price.

Or go for automated devices

The good thing about technology is that it eases our lives to a point that we fail to believe the possibility of it. There are numerous automated watering devices in the market that you can connect to a water source and then control using your phone and wireless technology from anywhere. These devices work using the internet and a dedicated app. You simply need to connect the device to the internet and install the app. What more? Nothing. You are good to pack your bag and book your flight tickets.

If you ask me about my personal favorite way to keep my plants alive while I’m I’d say either self-watering pots or automated watering devices. They’ve saved me from coming home to a bunch of dead plants multiple times. However, when I was younger, I used to have my little sister water my plants while I was away. I remember one time when she ended up over-watering them and drowned them all! Needless to say, I learned my lesson and now rely on self-watering pots.

So, there you have it! Some tips and tricks to help you water your plants while you’re away on a long vacation.
